Public Health: the dangers of Southern Fried Chicken
It's no news that Americans are getting bigger. It's been the case for so long that it's almost a cliche.
But recent figures from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show some fascinating disparities across the USA, as well as demonstrating the full brutal reality of the country that is now an official fat farm.

Whatever it is in the US diet that's causing obesity, there is one over-riding fact from the 2007 figures produced by the CDC: only Colorado has less than 20% of its population qualifying as obese. At the other end of the scale are the deep-fried-everything southern states of Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama. Neighbours Louisiana and West Virginia make the cut by less than half of one percent.
The CDC has produced a series of slides showing the progress of obesity in the USA since 1985. You can download the presentation (opens in OpenOffice.Org or equivalent software) from http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/obesity/trend/maps/obesity_trends_2007.ppt
