As another "Red Shirt" protest gathers, following the entry into the Parliament complex earlier this week and the declaration of a state of emergency, the position of the Thai government is increasingly difficult.
Although the Red Shirt supporters of Thaksin are relatively small in number, they appear to have the tacit support of the police and army which have largely stood aside in protests of recent weeks.
To what extent that approach has been placed upon them by the Prime Minister who has sought to avoid obvious conflict and to mark it as a differentiating factor between his tenure and that of Thaksin and to what extent it is local commanders taking the initiative to keep protests good natured is not clear.
However, the protesters are largely from outside Bangkok and residents of the city are becoming fed up with the situation leading to the danger of counter-protests.
With the police and army on standby, they will be caught in the middle if violence flares up.
