The Chief Officers' Network - your business advantage / Industries / InfoTech & Comms / Industry / InfoTech: the most ironic conference since the psychics put up posters?

If any one group of people should be tech savvy, then surely it's e-government specialists. And if anyone is supposed to be saving money, then it's governments who are ploughing revenues for years to come into trying to shore up their economies.

So it seems to be an anathema that 400 people will (mostly) fly and spend at least five nights in hotels.

To be fair to Singapore, its Ministry of Finance has spotted a gap in the market and taken commercial advantage of it in arranging for this event. No one can blame them for that. No doubt other governments are watching and even now wondering what events they can promote to bring in so many people for so long. And Singapore hopes to market its expertise in developing e-government to those about to embark on the path.

For conferences can take up the slack from business travel and tourism when they are in decline.

But promoted as demonstrating "best practices in infocomm" - it nevertheless begs the question as to why they all need to be in the same place.
