IDrive (note it's not a small i) has been a leader in online data storage and back up for some years, but it has always had a capacity-limited system. But, by removing some of the features of its premium "pro" pack, the company behind IDrive, Pro Softnet Corp., says it can provide unlimited data storage for only USD49.50 per annum.
What are the primary limitations?
First, the price is per single Windows machine. So no Mac or Linux users need apply (there is a separate scheme for Mac users). And multiple machines running on peer to peer network are also outside the scope unless each has its own account.
Second while upload speeds for the first 150GB is at the best available, after than it's capped to a maximum speed of 200Kbps. Users in the UK and Australia note: if you are able to get anywhere near that speed on most connections, you are doing well.
Third, Files deleted from the Backup Set (files selected for backup) are removed from IDrive's servers after 30 days.
"We created IDrive Unlimited in response to feedback from our customers," said Stephen Gold, Business Development Manager at Pro Softnet. "We had always stayed away from unlimited storage plans because of the growing amount of data being produced, i.e. we wouldn't be able to sustainably backup an unlimited amount of data while providing the level of security and performance we always have with IDrive Pro. However, we had many home users saying they would still like an unlimited backup option from us, even if it meant sacrificing a few of IDrive Pro's benefits."
There is no contract: customers can cancel at any time. And a free 30 day (no credit card required) trial is available. http://www.idrive.com/
