Malaysia's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said, in the budget speech a matter of weeks ago, that progress on corruption trials was too slow. He ordered the creation of a system of Corruption Sessions Courts. Yesterday, the first court held its first sitting.
There are courts in the major commercial centres around the country including Johor Baru on the border with Singapore, Kuching and Kota Kinubalu, the state capitals of the two Malaysian Borneo states, Ipoh - long a centre for several large industries, Kuala Lumpur, the national capital and a several other districts.
As specialist tribunals, the courts will have specialist judges who will focus on corruption and ensure the proper application of the Whistelblower's Protection Act 2010 and also ensure that cases are properly prepared and expedited by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
