Foreign companies led the rush to dump staff in Ireland last month.

The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment said yesterday that the number of people who were made redundant in July 2009 was 65% higher than the number made redundant in the same month a year earlier.

That brings the number of official redundancies - those which require notification to the Department, to more than 49,000 in the first seven months of the year. That figure is set against the same period last year that was just 20,000 (approx).

At the head of the queue to reduce headcount last month were US company Intel, Element Six owned by De Beers and Thomas Cook, facing the knock-on effects of the liquidation of its parents.
