Maico Greg Buncio, 22, a star of the Philippines Superbike series and a quadruple national Champion, died in Hospital following injuries sustained in a crash in qualifying at the Clark circuit near Manilaon Saturday. The circumstances of his death are raising disturbing questions as to safety.
Buncio's family and his Suzuki team are reported in Philippines national media as saying that Buncio did not die at the track but rather as a result of serious internal injuries.
Those injuries included serious damage to his kidney and liver.
But it is the cause of those injuries that are now the focus of attention: it is alleged that he suffered a puncture to his internal organs from a metal bar that was protruding from a safety barrier that was being installed but had not been finished.
Buncio was spat off his bike, bounced across a gravel trap and onto the unfinished barrier.
However, say the same reports, the owners of the circuit were taken by surprise when the story surfaced as there was no mention of such a cause of the injury in the incident report made at the time.
One of the questions to be asked is the most basic of all: if the safety barrier was incomplete, why was racing allowed or why was the barrier not covered to a safe depth with impact protection?
