PR: Health warning: vague headlines can cause side effects

Gosh: what a headline! Despite a poor showing in the Shanghai Grand Prix, the odds on Williams getting a third "world crown" are standing at only 6-1 according to the headline of a BetFred.Com press release that arrived this morning. Quel surprise. Reach for the beta-blockers to control the excitement. Or not....

Williams F1 suffered the indignity of being one of the two teams to have a car finish behind Team Lotus' Heikki Kovalainen in Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai. And despite - or perhaps because of - some of the most radical tech in the current field, they have not done well in any of the first three races of the season.

And so it came as something of a surprise that they were regarded as amongst the front runners for a championship, according to BetFred.Com's press release.

Then reality kicked in: it could not be in relation to Formula One because the Williams team has more than three Championships in the bag anyway.

So, obviously, it must relate to one of the Williams sisters in tennis. That's a ball-sport so we don't pay it much attention: here at ChiefOfficers.Net if it doesn't have a f**k off engine and go like stink, we don't want to know. But we do know enough to decide we could not write about the confusion in the headline without finding out which sister it was talking about. And somewhere in the dark recesses of a mind that gathers and files information without being aware of it, there was a distinct feeling that whichever sister it was, she has won more than three "crowns" to use the terminology of the press release.

So we opened the release. And it's not about Serena. It's not about the other one, whatever her name is, either. Begins with V.....

In fact, it's about a Welsh snooker player called Mark Williams who is playing at The Crucible in Sheffield and who won the World Snooker Championship at the theatre-in-the-round venue in 2000 and 2003.

So, now we know. And so do you.

And, simply because we hate wasting the time invested in opening and reading a document because of a vague headline but that turns out to have absolutely no relevance to us, we've even written an article about it even though tennis and snooker would not, ordinarily feature anywhere near these pages.

So it seems to have worked. Balls.
