Sam Peter Cassaniti is 48 years old. In July 2008, he was released on parole from a sentence for defrauding the Australian government. He had served almost three years.
The prosecution say that Cassaniti was advising a company on its tax affairs and told the owners that they would need to pay a tax bill of almost AUD300,000. A cheque was drawn - but Cassaniti put it into his own bank account, it is alleged.
Despite his position, Cassaniti has been granted bail - of the relatively small sum of AUD10,000 - on condition he surrender his passport. He is due back in Court in mid January.
