How Not To Be A Money Launderer : Cover

How Not To Be A Money Launderer, a straightforward guide to detecting and deterring fraud and money laundering in organisations, has been reissued in paperback.

Taxation: Gordon Brown's success on tax reduction - less than zero.

Hidden away in the BBC's archives are all manner of treasures. The political interview programme On The Record was often fronted by the combative John Humphrys. The programme was taken off the air amid accusations that it was too political - and given the pally relationship between the BBC management and the Labour government, it was causing too much embarrassment. It had done exactly the same to the previous administration to great effect. Shortly before the programme was cancelled, Humphrys interviewed then Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown. We hope Auntie doesn't mind us quoting from that programme. We know Labour will object to the publication of the reality. Tough.

2002 - five years into Labour's term.

HUMPHRYS: Do you want to cut the starting rate of tax from twenty pence in the pound to ten pence in the pound?

GORDON BROWN: Yes I would like to, that's a long-term objective of the Labour Party.

2010: Basic rate of Income Tax: 20%

"Higher rate" on marginal salary above GBP37,400.

Introduction of "Additional rate" of 50% for all income over GBP150,000.

Personal allowance: GBP6475. From 2010, personal allowance reduces by GBP1 for every GBP2 of income exceeding GBP100,000.

Windfall tax on bonuses in the financial sector - 50%.

Married couple's allowance is available only for those aged 75 and over. It's a tax relief and is allowed at 10% i.e ten pence in the pound. That's half the tax payable and is therefore in reality worth only half its stated GBP6,965.

In addition, there have been substantial increases in corporation tax including the abolition of small business relief, increases in indirect taxation including duties and the income-tax adjunct "National Insurance" which is payable by both employer and employee with both a revision of the maximum qualifying amount (above which no NI was payable) and a substantial percentage increase in rates.
