200 jobs go as 1car1 folds

A note of personal sadness: 1car1 was our favourite UK car hire company. Rarely over the last few years have we had a car more than a few weeks old, and rarely one that had travelled more than a couple of thousand miles when we picked it up. The cars were spotlessly presented. And even more, every single one of the dozens of the company's staff we have dealt with at a variety of locations were professional, helpful and - perhaps most importantly - nice.

The administrators for the company PwC say that the company was reliant on an unsustainable level of funding in the current climate and that the "funders" of the cars are demanding them back in short order.

1car1 was a fleet operator of Vauxhall cars, built by GM in the UK and Germany.

It is a mark of the state of the automotive industry that GM is not, at least so far as we know, buying the company and using it as a simple vehicle for putting new cars out for a few weeks use and then selling them on as used. That's a modification of the scheme that GM adopted when it formed its finance arm in the US in a previous glut.

The administrator is PwC in Leeds. With luck, some at GM might take up that suggestion and keep the spirit of 1car1 alive and its genuinely excellent team together.
