Alternative Power
Coal, oil and gas are still plentiful - but they are finite, increasingly vulnerable to production disruption and significant variations in price. They are also internationally traded commodities making them susceptible to political interference. However, the reliance of the world on these resources is such that use is perhaps less price-sensitive than almost any other product. The supply to consumers is usually from a monopoly or near-monopoly which, although commonly denied to operate as a cartel often displays many of the characteristics of being a cartel.
