Heidfeld has not even been granted a single Friday session since becoming the third German driver in the German-owned team. He has done some straight-line testing but almost no other running.
Pirelli have a redundant Toyota TF109, the car that Toyota retired at the end of last season when they left the series.
A bizarre statement from Norbert Haug says "“It was clear from the beginning of our cooperation that Mercedes GP Petronas would release Nick from his obligations as soon as a promising opportunity as an active F1 driver developed. This is now the case and there could be no more experienced and knowledgeable driver in the cockpit to steer the tyre development for next season.”
er.. it's not an F1 drive, Norbert and as for experience and knowledge - arguably, it would have been a better move to send Schumacher to Pirelli where he won't have anyone to bully and let Heidfeld do some proper racing if he's as good as Haug says.
