Heidfeld ran the Jerez test last week and "really impressed" Team Principal Eric Boullier.
Kubica has undergone a third surgery, this time in a nine hour operation to repair his wrist. The hospital's statement said it would probably not be necessary for him to have a further operation on that site.
But in recent days, he has had visitors, seen the police and made phone calls suggesting that he is already back in determined form.
However, it is regarded as very unlikely that he will race in Formula One this season, hence the decision to "replace" him with Heidfeld.
Note: why do we refer to "Renault" and not "Lotus Renault?" Because the FIA says they are "Renault" and until they say otherwise, that's the official name of the entrant to the series.
