First up today was news from Williams: for next year, it will supply transmission systems to Hispania Racing. Hispania has not announced any plans to change engine supplier and so it is expected that they will continue with the Cosworth unit.

Both Lotus and Hispania have had problems with transmission. But Williams, which also uses Cosworth engines, has not had similar problems. So the switch to the proven Williams unit allied to the engine that both teams are familiar with makes sense. And for Hispania, it takes away a major headache: the development of the transmission (to the extent that it's allowed) will not be their responsibility.

Lotus has previously announced that it will take its transmission for the 2011 season and onwards from Red Bull. And although no announcement had been made, it was widely expected that Lotus would join Red Bull in taking Renault engines: with that combination punching above its weight in spending terms at the top of the championship boards, to take the risk of trying to mate unproven components made no sense.

Today, Lotus have announced that they will, indeed, take the Renault engines.

That restores another of the historic name links: while Lotus-Cosworth was famous amongst die-hard fans, there is little doubt that the black and gold Lotus-Renault cars grabbed wider public affection.
