On 25th February, the newspaper published his comments on the future of Formula One.

He was quoted as saying "The damage was done when Honda announced in December that they were pulling out and although there has been a slim hope that they might survive, my feeling is that it's all come to nothing."

The slim hope he was talking about was a management buy-out, in part financed by Bernie Ecclestone - which Stewart rightly pointed out would be a "clear conflict of interest." Stewart was speaking after Honda's then president, Takeo Fukui said there were no serious offers to buy the team.

On 6th March, Ross Brawn announced he was taking over the team although funding was not disclosed.

Although some media misreported Stewart's comments as saying that there was no future (he was much more guarded than that) for the team, he was clearly not in tune with the way things were going in the background - for BrawnGP made its announcement, the car had already been fitted with a Mercedes engine - and surely there is no way that a deal could have been reached and - as the very successful testing almost immediately after the announcement was made has shown - so clearly matched to the chassis in just two weeks.
