F1: Massa dashes out and dashes hopes
It seemed like a good plan at the time. With rain clouds hovering and a downpour just a few kilometres down the road, the obvious thing to do was put on the sticky tyres, blat around and get a decent time then watch as everyone else struggled as conditions deteriorated. Only they didn't.

Massa and his team made a huge error of judgement. With four minutes to go, he was fourth fastest in the first qualifying session. Then, as the track cooled and humidity fell, tyres stayed good for longer and engines developed more power.
Suddenly, when there was no time to get the car out for a second run, a dozen or so cars went faster than Massa had. And he was, without fanfare or ceremony, dumped almost to the back of the grid.
And so he will start tomorrow's race in 16th position - behind even those who have penalties.
His team-mate Raikkonen was only 9th fastest - but because two cars ahead of him will suffer penalties, he has been elevated to 7th on the grid.
