The Chief Officers' Network - your business advantage / Special Interest / Motorsport / F1: McLaren to throw kitchen sink, Hamilton throws it in the kitty litter

As McLaren say they will will go all out in Suzuka ("we're throwing everything including the kitchen sink at it," MD Jonathan Neale said in a press conference on Wednesday) Lewis Hamilton might have misheard.

He might have heard "throw it in the kitty litter."

For that's what Hamilton did this morning. "It was just unfortunate that the gravel was very slippery at that point where I was on it," he said, adding "a couple of other people went off there and they got away with it."

Hamilton is not having a great time: he's still in the Championship hunt but his chances are fading. He was in the lead four races ago but he has three DNFs out of those four races and, in two of them, he's had an accident with another car.

Which makes his statement that this morning's accident "wasn't even that big an off" all the more telling. He hit the tyre wall and knocked chunks off the car. Frantic scrabbling by the team put it back together just in time to catch eight minutes of the second session.

Tomorrow, everyone says, will be very wet. Indeed, it started to rain just as today's practice was finishing and it's expected to rain for 24 hours. That's after qualifying. Sunday, on the other hand, is expected to be completely dry.

Except, of course, for the slippery gravel.
