The for the third time since the Shanghai circuit was added to the F1 calendar, the race started behind the safety car due to heavy rain.

It would be pointless to try to describe the race: it was close, fierce - and full of incident.

The end result was that Sutil almost made it to sixth place but the car, unweighted as it entered a particularly wet corner, spun away from him knocking both front wheels off.

Raikkonen complained of a misfire - but it was Massa who pulled off and stopped.

Alonso slipped back from his second place on the grid although for no obvious reason.

The Brawn GP cars worked well, and took the route to long-term success by reducing the chances they took - although Button did have a few ding-dong moments with Webber to finish third. Webber eventually finished second, behind his new team made Vettell.

Red Bull has not won a race since formation more than a decade ago. A first and second is vindication for Christian Horner, the team owner and recognition of the high level of investment from Red Bull.

Button, having won the first two races of the season, finished third - and said that just to finish the race was an achievement.

Ferrari, again, scored no points.
