F1: Red faces at Honda?
Two dismal years for Honda F1 and huge amounts of money thrown at coming at the back. But they had brought in Ross Brawn, architect of Ferrari's resurgence. He decided that last year's car was hopeless. So they pulled out at the end of last season. No one would give them shedloads of money for the team so ownership passed under a management buyout for an as yet undisclosed figure. What Brawn GP got was the development he had supervised last year - but not the planned-for Honda engine. Off to Melbourne for a team that doesn't even have any sponsors and has two has-been drivers.

Imagine the red faces. Qualifying for the first race of the 2009 season. And Brawn GP cars are first and second in the first two qualifying sessions. Alonso nearly didn't make it out of the first session, and Hamilton didn't even get into his car for the second, settling for 15th - and the benefits that not being in Q3 bring - like being able to change more things for the race.
At the end of Q2, Button, the second of the Brawns, was 3 tenths faster than 3rd place Vettel
Barrichello and Button are the oldest driver pairing on the grid: 36 and 29 respectively. Button has, he says, taken a 50% cut in salary to stay at Brawn. Of course, if he had not, he had no other drive. Other teams wanted near-teenagers, but not so Brawn GP.
Brawn GP were painting their cars last night: it had been reported that Richard Branson was considering buying the team. But owning a team is a bottomless pit and Branson is a rather more astute businessman than some others. So a deal as major (but not name) sponsor was finalised after practice yesterday, and the car grew Virgin logos.
