The deal, with F1 rights owner Ecclestone, has been on-off for several years but the current mayor or Rome has worked hard to bring the planned event to fruition.
It will not run around the old ruins or other parts of "classic Rome" but in the newer - and more disposable - commercial district.
The promoters are clear: the race planned for 2012, if all permissions and standards are met, will be a supplemental Italian race: it will not replace Monza as the venue for the Italian Grand Prix.
