Rosberg's race came to a premature end when the right rear wheel flew off and bounced high into the air, hitting Williams mechanic Nigel Hope before being grabbed by others in the pits. The error in failing to fit the wheel properly has cost the team USD50,000 - half of the penalty imposed on Ferrari for cheating in Hockenheim.
Another USD50,000 was handed to Renault: they released Robert Kubica directly into the path of Adrian Sutil resulting an a collision and the retirement of both cars. That incident happened as concentration in the pit lane lapsed as Rosberg's wheel bounced high and out of control.
