Sometimes, even big business makes a labour of love: Working Title and Universal put themselves out of a limb for this film. Released in the UK in the summer of 2010 and in Japan at the same time, its US release has been - actually, we are not sure it's ever been released in the USA.
With Universal behind it the film will, of course, make it to TV and DVD. And that's where most fans will want to see it. For sure, a big screen and screaming hi-fi sound will add to the experience but motor racing on a screen is a strangely solitary affair and most people, except for special screenings, would prefer to watch a tribute in some privacy.
The story is not new but it has almost always been told in a fragmented way. Very little of the footage is new, but it's never been collected together before. Some of the in-car footage is new and spectacular.
For sure, the Top Gear tribute to Senna (illegally but importantly uploaded to YouTube
is a tremendous piece of film - made all the more impressive by the total shamelessness of Clarkson as his coverage is steeped in emotion.
Senna, the film, is devoid of such commentary. It's almost a straight-line telling of the Senna story, much of it in his own words.
At Sundance, the film is a sell-out for each of its six showings.
