The Big Green Machines saw some improvement in their performance towards the end of 2008 but generally the official team has not matched Honda and Yamaha yet, sources say, the company has spent more than USD35 million dollars on their campaign.
Compared to Honda's hundreds of millions spent to slide down the Formula One grid, that's not a lot of money. But Kawasaki does better in road racing and off-road sports - and spends less.
The company said in a statement today "As the world economy is not likely to recover in a short period due to the major impact of the financial crisis, Kawasaki decided to suspend its MotoGP racing activities from 2009 season onward and reallocate management resources more efficiently."
But the company is not going to cease racing: "will continue racing activities using mass-produced motorcycles as well as supporting general race-orientated customers."
Marco Milandri has just joined the team and tested for the team at Valencia right after the last race of the 2008 season.
John Hopkins who has been with the team for rather longer - and was fourth in the 2007 championship but had a dismal 2008 season, in comparison. And he ended the season heading for hospital to take out the metal plates from his left ankle and foot, damaged early in the season in Qatar.
