Surtees was hit on the head by a wheel and tyre during a race at Brands Hatch. A car in front of him crashed and debris flew through the air. As a result, Surtees crashed into a barrier.
He was treated at the circuit medical centre and then airlifted to hospital.
Surtees was a star in the ascendant: he had performed well in various formulae in the past year and graduated to F2 at the beginning of this season. He scored his first F2 podium on Saturday.
His father is the voice, for English speaking markets, of A1GP.
Deaths in motor-racing are now very rare due to stringent safety rules. But it remains a dangerous sport.
